Email of the Day from Nicole:I am 26 years old and still get the occasional breakout. I use neutrogena soap to wash my face everyday and also neutrogena moisturizer.
When I put my make-up on, the area with the blemishes is always red and looks darker once my make-up is done. What can I do to even out my skin when applying my make-up?
Thanks a million,
Nicole King
Answer: I am so sorry for your troubles. I have never used Noxema products and can't tell you whether or not to continue use. Skin problems can be very individual. I would suggest going to a dermatologist to find out if you are allergic to your skin products or foundation. Sorry I don't have more to tell you , but I can suggest using several different skin products and foundations till you get some desired results.
I like Estee Lauder skin care products and Mac foundations. Also for a more even coverage I would use a foundation sponge and pat your base on when applying to eliminate smudging.
I find it works great!
Email of the Day from Judy: Hi Devon
I'd like to start off by saying your amazing. I've seen your work on Maury a few times.
Anyway, my question to you is, how do you get these women to look so YOUNG? I'm 25 years old and very pretty, I've been wearing make up since I was 15 but I can never get the right foundation. I have a spider vein under my right eye, (allot of people think it's sexy) I unfortunately hate it, but nothing I use to cover it, works. What would you recommend? I use "REVLON Age Defying make up, early tan" I like to keep a little tan all year round. Also what is good for cleaning pores? What covers pores?Thank you so much.
Judy. From Vancouver Canada.Answer: Dear Judy,
Mac foundations are the best! www.maccosmetics.com and you should use Mac sheer coverage under your eyes. This should cover up your spider vein. Then with a sponge to avoid streaking apply foundation lightly to your entire face. A great trick for getting rid of pores with your foundation is when setting foundation with powder you should use a powder puff and as you are applying powder press puff to your face and turn ever so slightly. This tip works great for hiding pores. Also try their Studio Fix Foundation for great coverage all in one step!
Under your eyes though, press ever so slightly with minimal powder to avoid accentuating wrinkles. For cleaning pores I use Estee Lauder Clean Finish Purifying Toner which is light and non abrasive . You can get this at any Department Store. The rest of their products work great as well. Have a great day and see you tomorrow!!!
Question of the Day from Amanda: MY NOSE ISN'T EXACTLY HUGE BUT IT ISN'T SMALL. ARE THERE ANY TIPS TO MAKING IT LOOK SMALLER?
SINCERELY,
AMANDAAnswer: The secret to creating a thinner appearing nose is on page (22) of my makeup transformation book "Double Take" Here are the steps!
1) Take a somewhat wide blending brush and apply a natural tan shadow to each side of your nose starting at the inner corner of your eyebrow creating lines that go all the way down to each nostril. Be sure to be subtle for day and remember you can apply a little darker for evening. For women of medium color you should use a medium brown shadow and for very dark women you can use dark brown shadow.
HELPFUL HINT: For a more natural blend you can add a little of your blush color to the mix.
See you tomorrow!!!
Hello, I hope you had a wonderful Holiday season. I am so happy to be back answering all of your makeup questions daily in 2001 !
Question of the Day from Jeri : How do you create the perfect brow line?
Like Gwyneth Paltrow? Are there templates? Thanks,
JeriAnswer: It's important to note here that a well-arched eyebrow opens the eye and frames the face.
First, the length of the eyebrow is crucial. If it's too long or too short your eyebrow will distort the balance of your face.
Step 1). To get the perfect length eyebrow use any makeup brush and place one end next to your nostril, with the stem of the brush pointing straight up. (Near the inner corner of your eye).
This is where the start of your brow should be. Mark it lightly with a white liner pencil.
Step 2). Next, rotate the brush to the outside corner of your eye. (Pointing towards your temple. The rotation makes a windshield wiper motion).
This is where your eyebrow should end. Mark it lightly with a white liner pencil.
Step 3). Now, rotate the brush back half way.
This is where your arch should be drawn. Mark it lightly.
Step 4). To highlight the hairs that need to be plucked from either end of your brow, or under or over the brow, use a white liner pencil again. This creates a diagram for you to follow, pinpointing the hairs that you'll tweeze, and allowing you to create the actual shape of your brow.
Step 5). Now, pluck away. Use your fingers to pull the brow up towards the temple. This makes the brow taut and allows easier access to each hair.
Step 6). Now take the tweezers and catch a hair in the prongs. Pull the hair out in the same direction from the way it grows. This makes tweezing easier and less painful.
Helpful Hint: if you experience too much pain tweezing, it helps to apply an external anesthetic that is available at any pharmacy. As far as templates you can find them but I personally have not used them so I cannot tell you if they are helpful or not.
Step 1). For application you'll be using your slanted eyebrow brush. To keep the brush shape press the side of the slant into the a color shadow that best matches you hair color. Be sure to gently tap-off excess shadow so there will be no flaking and smudging. Then gently start to draw the brow following the marks you created when, earlier, you measured the proper length of your brow. I believe using shadow is much easier, because if you make a mistake drawing your brow with a pencil, it's much harder to rectify. Once you've drawn the brow with shadow, you can strengthen the effect by moistening your brush, dipping it into more shadow and reapplying the color for a solid effect.
For a Gwyneth look look at a picture of her and draw the shape of her brow on your face as close as you can.

Question from Stephanie: I used to have cat eyes, but know I have droopy eyes, I mean the skin over my eye lid is drooping. I am only 32 years old and I need to know how can I get my eyes to look more appealing and not so droopy. Answer: To accentuate a droopy eye you should apply a desired crease shadow color say in a brown, smoke, or etc. with a blending crease brush and cover the entire lid of both eyes pressing harder at the lash line and softer as you blend up towards the brow bone. This will give the illusion of a deeper lid and will diffuse the appearance of a droopy saggy lid. This is also a great technique for asian women who desire more of a lid. Then continue on and add your mascara to the top and bottom lashes. You may also want to add a precise line of liner to the outer corner of your top eyelash lines, starting at the middle of the eye and ending in a fine catlike point at the corners. This technique will also help to bring a droopy eye up. HELPFUL HINT: If you apply a highlight shadow say in a champagne or gold metallic on the brow bone using a sponge applicator you will get a better blend of the crease shadow into the highlight shadow as you work your way up to the brow bone. Reason for this is that the metallic pigment allows the crease shadow to blend more beautifully. Remember the more beautiful the blend of the two shadows the softer the effect will look. Question from PMA1000: How did you conceal the dark circles on that woman on Maury Povich? I use a yellow stick type deal, concealer, and then powder. It didn't look like the eyes you did...lol...of course not. But, I am fighting a nightmare with dark circles, I don't even want to go out anymore. Answer: I use a full coverage foundation under the eyes that is a little lighter than the foundation I use all over the face. You can also use a sheer coverage foundation which is less noticeable if you have fine lines around the eyes and better for daylight. You can use the full coverage for night and if your a makeup artist it works great for television and for theatrical makeup. Mac has the best full coverage and sheer coverage I have found, you truly can not feel it on your face and it has such a beautiful finish. Also you can try Mac Studio Fix foundation which is a powder and foundation all in one step and also great for daylight, if its to sheer you can wet your sponge then apply again. You can find these foundations at www.maccosmetics.com So find the foundation color that matches your skin tone and also purchase one that is one shade lighter for highlighting under the eye. Remember to apply lightly for coverage and add more if needed to achieve your desired effect. HELPFUL HINT: You might want to apply the first coat of lighter foundation under the eyes and darker foundation to the rest of face using a sponge to avoid smudging and powder lightly to avoid caking. Then apply your makeup. When you are finished with your makeup then determine if you need more lighter highlight foundation under the eye. The reason for this is once you have applied beautiful makeup attention is drawn away from the dark circles on your face and you may not have to apply a second coat. Check in tommorow for an answer to another one of your questions from my MAURY email !!! |

I recently was asked how do you acieve a deeper looking lid? This is how you do it. Take a highlight shadow say in gold and cover entire lid and brow bone using a sponge applicator. Then take a crease blender brush and medium to dark brown shadow and follow the crease line of your eye creating a line then blend. You will see a very noticeable lid at this point. Then apply your mascara and liner if you desire and your ready to go! You can also use different colors for the crease shadow and for highlighting to change the mood of your face. See you tommorow! |
