Email from Maria: I have a problem with my nose. If I laugh, cry, get cold, embarrassed, or hot my nose turns red. I've tried different types of powders and foundations but they all give me a cakey look. When the Holidays come so do the cruel jokes that go along with this season. What can I do to cover-up the problem?

Anxiously waiting,
Maria

Answer: You should first moisturize your face very well with your favorite moisturizer, then apply some Mac Studio Fix in your color to your problem area with a foundation sponge. This foundation is a wonderful solution because it is very light, but covers great! If the red still shows after trying this you might want to apply some of Mac's Sheer Coverage foundation to your nose first, then lightly dab on the Studio Fix. Be sure to spot base your entire face after correcting your problem so that your face is the same color as your nose. I hope this is helpful, if you have any more questions please be sure to email me again.

Have a wonderful day!

Email from Sonia: I have hot pink hair and I was wondering if you had any advice on how to match my makeup with my hair without looking like a clown. I love my hair color and do not wish to change it so i would greatly appreciate it if you could tell me what colors would not clash.

Sincerely, Sonia Martinez

Answer : The most sure way of not looking like a clown is to stick with natural colors, muted pinks, very soft purples, etc. Nothing to bright unless you want a outrageous look for evening. For day I would stick with more muted colors.(browns, soft pinks, taupe) You can sport that very glossy or metallic look, but stick with my suggested colors for your eyes ,blush and lips when doing so. Have fun with glitter for evening and don't be afraid to experiment, makeup washes off so have fun!

Having pink hair is a great way to express yourself and you sound like a blast!

I hope I have helped you out today.

Email question from Jolene:I can never get both my eyebrows shaped perfect.I have looked into permanent make-up for my eyebrows. Is this a good idea?

Jolene

Answer: Hi , I prefer that you don't get your brows tattooed because the shape of a brow really changes your face. If you tattoo your brows permenatly you limit the fun you can have with experimenting with different looks. However, if you decide to tattoo them I would get them shaped as thin as you can. This is so you may still add to your brows to change their shape or make them as thick as you want. Go ahead be creative and see how different you can look by changing your brows shape.

See you tomorrow and Happy Birthday to my brother Shawn!!!!!!

Email from Lilcheetoochick: I have been trying to find out for a while why your face is so white when you get pictures developed. Is there anything that I can put on my face that won't make it so white? Even if it is under my make-up or something. Please write me back soon.

Thanks,
LiLCheetooChik

Answer: The reason your face is so white could be in the developing. You might want to ask your photo lab to print your photos darker. As far as makeup if you are very fair this is always going to be an issue because color film shot with a portable camera and a flash cannot distinguish ivory coloring in a skin tone and almost always appears to light. Using a better camera with softer lighting would show more pigment in the color of your ivory complexion. Applying a darker makeup just to counter act this problem would leave you with a darker face and lighter body which isn't very attractive. If you have any more questions regarding this matter please feel free to email me.

See you tomorrow !!!

Email from Tydanzr: Devon, I was just checking your web site and BOY !!!!!!!! You have added some great new tidbits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW. GLAMCAM. I am so blown away with everything you do.

My question to you is do you prefer lip liner before applying your lipstick?

Answer: I do prefer lip liner if you are trying to achieve a larger or more defined lip. You must have a very defined lined lip for these effects to look more natural as well as beautifully blend the lipstick into the liner. Lip liner also aids in stopping lipstick from bleeding . If you desire just a little color with an unlined look just use lipstick and apply it with a lip brush for just a little more precision.

Have a great day and check back tomorrow!!!

Email from Jessica Lynn: HI, I WOULD LIKE TO ASK SOME MAKEUP QUESTIONS. WHAT COLOR DO YOU PREFER ON EYES WHITE OR SILVER? WHAT LIP STICK COLORS DO YOU PREFER? WHAT COLOR BLUSH DO YOU PREFER? THANK YOU FOR TAKING YOUR TIME HAVE A NICE DAY BYE

JESSICA LYNN

Answer: As far as colors for eyes I prefer natural colors mostly for everyday. For evening you can be more daring . You can mix a little silver metallic in the mix for day when blending, but save the fun stuff for evening. Reason being that daylight doesn't really compliment heavy makeup. I also like white makeup but more for character work. For lipsticks I prefer browns, plums, and some pinks for all women of color and warmer skinned Caucasians. For very light skinned women I prefer pinks, oranges, light browns, and reds.. So for the blush color just remember to select a blush that will coordinate with your lipstick color so all your makeup will work together in perfect harmony.

See you tomorrow!!

Happy Birthday Grandma, I love you!!!

Email from Jordan: I have really oily skin and it seems when ever I put makeup on it is always a mess a hour or so later because of my oily skin.what can I do?

Answer: The problem with oily skin is that their is several factors to its cause. Heredity, diet, type of foundation, and so on... Your problem could be any one of these. What I would do first before going to a dermatologist, would be to try several different oil free foundations because we all react differently to formulas that make up each foundation. Second start drinking lots of water, this helps with oily skin. Most importantly change your diet to see if this is the cause. Often it is, but heredity could also be the reason and eating less oily foods should still help. When purchasing your foundation also ask if they have a oil regulator. This is a product that helps regulate oily skin. Also find a great powder, because constantly powdering your face may be your only solution. If it is use a powder puff and loose powder, this last longer than using a pressed powder and you wont have to apply as often. If nothing works I would see a dermatologist. Try these suggestions and let me know your progress.

I hope they help!!!

Email from Jenn: Hello. I'm 20 years old, and not too long ago realized that what you do is basically what I want to do. Unlike you, though, I'm having trouble getting off the ground. I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and have limited cosmetic education here. I have completed a theatrical make up and theory class, and now am moving on with a cosmetology course.

Basically, my question to you is what I can do, and where I can go to get some experience.....I've done make up for school plays, and volunteered doing make up artistry at a department store. I'm also hoping to apply at Mac Cosmetics soon, seeing as they have some of the best cosmetics I've seen around, and I love all the products I have from them.

So, if you could give me some information, it would be very appreciated.

Thanks ever so much,

Jenn Kitzmann

Answer for Jenn: First let me say that its great that you have figured out what it is you love to do. This is a major breakthrough and so many people live their whole lives not knowing what their passion is. As for what to do, just try to get as much experience as possible. You just get better the more you practice. One of the ways I learned was by drawing off of fashion magazine covers and doing pencil drawings of B/W beauty photographs. The pencil drawings really helped me to understand shading and contouring, plus they made great gifts. I never went to school to learn makeup I just loved it and kept at it. Feel free to send me some photos of your makeup and I will let you know what I think and try to help you. I hope my message to you has helped and great luck to you in the future. May makeup bring as much joy to you as it has to me.

Thanks for your email,

Devon Cass

Email Question from Janie: I am a new mom and don't have much time for myself. Please give me some inexpensive and quick makeup tips to keep me looking good on the go. Thanx for your help,

Janie

Answer: Hi Janie , I hope that this quick makeover description will help you out during your very special pregnancy. You can use your desired colors just follow the steps...

FOUNDATION

Step 1). Always moisturize before applying foundation.

Step 2). For the quick makeover I suggest spot basing problem areas such as redness, dark circles, and blemishes.

Helpful Hint: always use a sponge to apply foundation and pat the foundation on, don't smear. This gives more even coverage and no streak marks. Be sure to apply a little foundation on eyelids for more effective blending of eye shadows.

BROWS

This quick makeover takes into account that your eyebrows are always going to be groomed. At most, you may need to fill in the brows with desired color shadow using your slanted eyebrow brush.FOUNDATION

EYES

Step 1). Using your sponge applicator, pop those brow bones with a matte highlight color shadow. Press harder at the arch, softer as you move towards the crease.

Step 2). When time is of the essence, a simple shadow of a desired color over entire lid using a shading brush can make a subtle statement.

Step 3). Then take a liner brush with desired color and line the bottom lash line three quarters of the way from the outside corner of the eye towards the nose. Remember softer is sometimes better.

Step 4). Then take your mascara and lightly brush on top and bottom lashes. Remember you can always add more but too much mascara can cause clumping and be very unsightly.

BLUSH

Step 1). Take the blush brush and desired color and gently dab blush to cheeks. A helpful tip is to smile ever so slightly as you move your brush pressing harder under the apple of your cheeks and then softer as you come towards the middle of your ear and on top of the apple.

Step 2). Also apply blush lightly to temples, chin, and nose using same brush.

LIPS

Step 1). Take lip brush and cover lips with desired color. Remember that a lip brush will help aid you in creating perfect lips every time.

I hope this quick makeover will help all you girls on the go as well!!!

See you tomorrow!!!

Email from Melissa: Devon- I love your website! I have so many questions and you have to help me. I have a lighter complexion than Jennifer Lopez but our hair color is the same and I want your advice on how to wear her make-up. I love her make-up wherever she goes. When she goes to the Grammy's and when she does movies, her face always looks beautiful. I really want that look, please help me.

Love Melissa

Answer: Dear Melissa you to can have that Jennifer look by using very natural colors such as light browns, pinks, golds, and silvers. Almost all the makeup that Jennifer uses has metallic pigments in them and that is what gives her her glorious glow... She also wears these colors for blush. As for lips she loves a lighter glossy lip. Her lip colors range from light pink to a lovely beige frost. She sometimes wears a red or plum but to achieve that dewey look stick with the lighter colors. For that final touch try a diamond dust powder on the tips of your cheeks, forehead, and chin this will definitely give you the dew that screams Jennifer!

Email from Barbara: Hi Devon,
First of all, you do wonderful work! I got your email address from The Maury Show. The makeup was wonderful!
Now for my questions.... I take steroids for asthma and they make my face very puffy. How can I slim it down? It's very embarrassing and I believe a turn-off for men. I do have high cheekbones which is good but with the puffiness its hard to tell anymore. This makes me very sad and self conscious. My boyfriend says I'm beautiful, but I have lost so many men because of my low self esteem. It looks like my face runs straight down to my neck. I'll send a pic if I can. I also have small squinty eyes and I'd like to know how I can brighten them and make them look bigger and wider. I have tried dark eye liner and even white, but it's just not there. Ya know? Now for a problem I'm sure alot of women ask.... I wear nothing but waterproof mascara, but without fail after awhile I get the raccoon eye. This is mainly a concern when I spend the night with my boyfriend. I wanna look good when I wake up!!!! Last but not least....... dark circles under my eyes!!!!! Foundation just brings it out more, but the powder helps for a little while. My allergies cause this. I'm a mess Devon! Please help me get gorgeous!!!!!!!
Thank You & God Bless
Barbara in New Jersey

P.S. Here is my pic. Please tell me what I do wrong and how to fix it? I'm the brunette on the left. The other girl is my beautiful sister Donna. I wanna be beautiful !

Answer: The key to creating a more glamorous you lies in contouring. You can make your face look ten pounds thinner by choosing just the right color blush, and contouring your cheeks, and galleon. Here are the steps

Step1: Using a contour brush and a medium brown blush for your skin tone, you simply draw a straight contour line from the middle of the ear, down to your mouth making the line very faint towards the mouth.

Step2.Then with a blush brush and a lighter color of your choice for day, blend the contour line, pressing harder on the line and more lightly as you brush up the cheeks. Next, repeat the process by drawing a line just under the jawbone with the darker blush, blending the lighter color in as you move the contour down towards the neck. These tips and more can be found on pages 21 and 22 in my book "DoubleTake". Contouring the neckline will alleviate the problem of your face seemingly running straight into your neck. The way you wear your hair will also help, brushing it forward with wisps covering your cheeks and jaw line will help to disguise the contour lines you've just drawn from looking to severe and also slim down your face as well.

Now, to open your eyes:

Step1. -- Take a white eyeliner pencil, and line the inner bottom lash line. Step1a.Then with a soft brown eye shadow line your bottom lash line. To make your eyes even bigger, draw a line under the lash line as well, but the second line should extend lower following your natural lash line so that you will make your eyes appear even larger. Make it as exaggerated and big as you need. This particular step is more natural for evening.

Step1b. -- Next, use a black or brown eye shadow and with a fine liner brush outline the outside of the white line you just drew below the bottom lash line.

Step2. -- Now, with the same shadow and a shading brush create a line just above your natural crease of the eye and then blend a color shadow of your choice into the soft brown line you just created for a softer look.

Step3. -- Then using a sponge applicator and a highlight shadow cover your entire lid pressing harder nearest the lash line and softer as you come up towards the soft brown line you just created (be careful not to mix highlight shadow into your crease line as it will diminish it's effect)

Step4. -- Then apply same shadow on your brow bone using the same sponge applicator pressing harder at the arch of the brow and softer as you come down towards you crease. You apply it this way for a more beautiful blend.

Step5. -- Then apply mascara to your top and bottom lashes. As for most water proof mascaras don't run during daily use, but sleeping in mascara does have it's downside. I recommend you experiment with different brands until you find one that works best for you. Unfortunately it's a hit and miss endeavor.

As for those dark circles:

Step 1. -- Moisturize dark circles and bags before applying foundation.

Step 2. -- With a sponge, dab the a medium colored foundation, I recommend Studio Fix from Mac, w 20 for you. under your eyes until the dark circles and bags are barely noticeable

Step 3. -- With the same sponge, blend in a darker w 25 foundation with the lighter foundation you just applied, until the color matches what you want for your overall foundation.

Helpful Hint: if you have really bad dark circles and bad bags, keep blending the two foundations until you achieve the desired effect. Remember, again, once your make-up is completed, the focus will be on the overall beautiful look, rather than any one specific area of the face.

Email from BeckaLynn: Hi Devon.... Simple question for me, just hope the "how to" is going to be just as easy *hahaha*
Christina Aguilera has that wonderful "glittery" and bold colored eyeshadow.... The MTV interview she did, she had a deep iridescent purple, and even though it was definitely "bold" she looked great. My question is this.... How in the world does she make her eyes look so incredible with those bold colors? What is the secret of applying the "glitter" to the eyes?

Currently I have the "color works" eye shadows and glitter shadows, I love their looks, especially the iridescent ones, but need some tips on applying them both.

I currently model and have always applied my own makeup and have always done my own hair, but this one look is one that I can't seem to get just right.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !

Answer: Great question! The way Christina makes her eyes look so great is by blending. You can use bold colors as long as you blend them into a softer color for a more subtle look.

Here are the steps:

1) Take a soft pink eye shadow and using a sponge applicator or shadow brush, apply the shadow from the brow bone just below the brow into the crease of the eye.

2) Then use a creamy iridescent shadow (purple, black, soft charcoal, etc.) for your lid, and apply it with a sponge applicator, pressing harder on the lid of the eye closest to the lash line and softer as you go up into the soft pink shadow in the crease of the eye. This is the secret to a beautiful blend!

3) Next, create a subtle line following the lower lash line using the same dark shadow.

4) Then apply black mascara to top and bottom lashes.

5) For the glitter their are several different types that you can use. One is a loose glitter. You apply this type by taking a little lip gloss and placing it where you want the glitter to go. Be careful though, if you put too much lip gloss it can create a blotchy mess. Now, wet the end of a sponge applicator. This will allow the glitter to stick to the sponge tip. Dip the applicator into the glitter and apply it to the glossed areas.

Helpful Hint: There is a one-step, brush-on glitter that is wonderful and will help you avoid any blotchy mess. It comes in all colors... just look for it at your local mall.

I hope I answered your question, if you have any more please feel free to email me again...

See you tomorrow!!!

Email from Venus: HI DEVON HOW ARE YOU, MY NAME IS VENUS AND I AM A BEGINNER AT PUTTING ON MAKEUP. I REALLY NEED TO KNOW THE RIGHT COLORS FOR MY FACE. I AM PUERTO RICAN AND I DON'T KNOW VERY MUCH ABOUT MAKE-UP AND I WOULD APPRECIATE
ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME...

Answer: Puerto Rican women are very exotic and should mostly wear warm colors unless you're extremely light-skinned. Blush and shadow colors include rust, brownish-purples, copper, browns, burgundy, black and for highlighting use a champagne frost. For your lips try plum, deep burgundy,or fudge brown. I feel these colors give a creamy complexion for most Latin skin types.

If you are extremely light-skinned you can use cooler colors such as peach, pinks, and pastels for your shadows. For blush you can use similar colors as your shadows. As for lips you can use Pinks, peaches, and reds. For a basic demonstration on how to apply simple day makeup click on Devon's Hot Tips.
